GNU - LINUX

GNU-Linux is an opensource operating system that can be completely customised, its users are free to decompile, compile, reverse engineer, and rebuild it to suit their own needs as long as they abide by the GNU General Public Licence. To read the GPL Click here.

Here are some useful linux commands.

To install an rpm packaged file (redhat package manager) from console use;
rpm -i (filename)

To unzip a gzipped archive use the command
gunzip (filename)

To extract a tar (tape archive) from console use the command;
tar -xvf (filename)

To use a shell script from a console use the command sh
Example sh configure

To go to a pure console mode press ctrl alt + f1 to go back to a desktop press ctrl alt + f7

To compile a program from source you need a properly working version of the GNU C Compiler, once unzipped and un tarred you must then go into the directory with a bash console, use the following commands; sh configure, make dep, make test, make install etc
(always check out the readme file that comes with source code ( it can save a lot of time ).
